Surveys of AI researchers and forecasters cut median predictions from sometime around 2060 to as soon as the late 2020s and early 2030s, and a handful of industry leaders publicly speculated about AGI arriving any day now. Hype articles projected a tipping point in 2025 where general-purpose AI would move from science fiction to boardroom roadmap. Yet as 2026 gets underway, what actually changed is more mundane and more interesting: agents, not AGI, are showing up inside workflows, and they need far more supervision than the headlines suggested.
If the last decade was about building large language models, the last 18 months have been about turning them into systems that can observe, decide, act, and loop with human partners. Enterprise surveys now show clear momentum: more than half of companies report having AI agents in production, and vendors expect agents to handle 10 - 25% of workflows in the next few months, always with guardrails and human oversight. The reality is not autonomous CEOs or lab assistants; it is orchestrated, narrow agents running checklists, filing tickets, and preparing drafts while humans retain judgment.

In 2025, AGI moved from thought experiment to pitch deck. Large surveys of AI experts and forecasters showed sharply shortened timelines: aggregations of thousands of predictions found probabilities of AGI before 2030 rising into the double digits, with a 50% chance clustered in the early 2030s rather than the 2060s. Industry leaders were even more bullish, with well-publicized claims of AGI by 2025 or superintelligence later in the decade, even as many researchers cautioned that these forecasts were fragile and dependent on how one defined general.
By the end of 2025, the gap between those confident timelines and deployed systems was obvious. Most people’s daily experience of AI remained chat interfaces, autocomplete, and recommendation systems rather than broadly general, autonomous entities. Expert reviews gradually leaned toward a more cautious view: AGI in the 2020s looked possible but far from guaranteed, and the plausible window widened from any day now to sometime between the late 2020s and 2040s, depending on how strongly one demanded human-level flexibility and scientific creativity.

What did change in 2025 - 2026 is the spread of AI agents - systems that combine models, tools, memory, and feedback loops to act on behalf of users. Reports from vendors and analysts describe agents moving from controlled pilots to operational roles inside CRMs, customer support, finance back offices, security operations centers, and IDEs. Venture investors echo the same theme: by the end of 2026, agents are expected to be in their initial adoption phase at enterprises, constrained as much by compliance and process as by raw model capabilities. Most organizations quietly converge on a pattern where agents propose and humans dispose.
The agent loop and AI ops
Under the hood, most agents today follow a familiar loop: receive a goal, break it into steps, call tools or APIs, reflect on intermediate results, and either ask for clarification or propose an action. Tool use and retrieval are now standard, with many agents being structured workflows wrapped around foundation models rather than free-roaming digital workers. Time horizons remain modest: hours or days of coherent behavior in constrained environments, rather than months of open-ended autonomy.
This has created a new operational layer. Teams need to design workflows, define escalation paths, monitor logs, and build evaluation harnesses to catch silent failures. AI operations and agent reliability engineering are emerging job descriptions, along with internal evaluation groups that measure autonomy, alignment with policy, and impact on key metrics - long before anyone attempts broad, unsupervised deployment.

Humans in the loop, by design
The spread of agents has not removed humans from the picture; it has shifted where humans sit. Surveys and case studies consistently emphasize that agents now handle the first draft, the first pass through a queue, or the mechanical reconciliation of records, but people still own goals, approvals, and edge cases. In enterprise deployments, the riskiest pattern is not agents replacing workers, but agents quietly producing errors that nobody is explicitly assigned to catch.

In the EU, the emerging AI Act and national guidance shape how agents show up inside organizations. Enterprises and regulators emphasize documentation, risk assessments, and clear human oversight, especially in high‑risk sectors such as healthcare, finance, and public services. This tends to favor AI as copilot designs where humans remain visibly in the loop, and it pushes vendors to explain their systems in more detail.
China offers a different picture. Analysts describe a proliferation of agentic and assistant‑like applications built on top of both proprietary and open‑source Chinese models, often targeting consumer super‑app ecosystems and enterprise automation. Beijing’s AI+ strategy frames AI as a horizontal enabler, but actual deployments still reflect the same pattern of supervised agents performing narrow tasks inside larger, human‑run organizations.
India stands out as a services and integration story. Major IT and BPO firms are embedding agents into codebases, support queues, and back‑office flows, turning them into leverage for multilingual, 24/7 service delivery rather than end‑user products. For many Indian workers, the visible change is not a standalone agent app, but the slow replacement of repetitive steps with agent‑driven automations in the tools they already use.
AI Agents in 2025 - 2026: Hype vs Reality
So what happened to AGI?
From a distance, the AGI discourse looks like an arc from optimism to realism, not a clean reversal. Expert surveys still assign non‑trivial probability to AGI in the next decade, and industry leaders still talk openly about planning for it. But the lived reality of AI in 2025 is that most value is coming from narrower systems - agents, copilots, recommenders, that plug into existing workflows under human supervision.
This is consistent with a familiar pattern in technology: people overestimate what can be done in two years and underestimate what can be done in ten. In that sense, the gap between AGI any day now and agents managing a slice of workflows with guardrails may simply be what progress looks like up close.
